Newcastle's two dive sites, Newcastle Baths and Soldiers Baths, are both shallow, shore-entry spots on the city's ocean coastline. The sites suit beginners, with depths ranging from one to nine metres, and both are reef or artificial reef environments. Access is entirely dependent on sea state; surge and surf can make either site unsuitable when swell is running. Species recorded include spotted wobbegong, Port Jackson sharks, eastern blue groper, common Sydney octopus, black cod, and red and crested morwong.
