Surigao del Sur on the Philippine Sea coast of Mindanao is defined by its brackish water sites, most notably the Hinatuan Enchanted River cave system and a technically demanding deep cave extension requiring advanced cave and trimix qualifications. The Britania Group at Boslon Island provides a contrasting shallow reef option for beginners. Visibility in the cave systems can be good, and water temperatures are warm throughout the year, typically ranging from the mid-twenties to thirty degrees depending on depth and season. Recorded species include blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, green sea turtle, pygmy seahorse, whale shark, and napoleon wrasse.
