The site is characterised by a distinct freshwater layer floating above the colder saltwater, which can impact visibility, typically ranging between 5 and 20 metres. Access is by boat only, and the site is suited to intermediate divers due to moderate currents and potential hazards including cold water, entanglement, and low visibility. The islets are also known for hosting a colony of New Zealand fur seals.

Taipari Roa, situated in the inner reaches of Doubtful Sound, offers a diverse underwater environment featuring dramatic rock walls, reefs, and kelp forests. Divers can explore depths ranging from 5 to 35 metres. The site is characterised by a distinct stratification, with a surface layer of freshwater overlying a deeper saltwater layer. Conditions vary, with visibility typically between 5 and 15 metres and moderate currents. Access is by boat only. Due to the cold water, potential for low visibility, and the presence of an overhead environment, this site is best suited for intermediate divers. Snorkelling is also possible at this location.
