Best for intermediate divers, 12-44m, boat entry.
Recherche Archipelago Nature Reserve is a sprawling network of reefs, wrecks, caves, and walls located off the coast of Australia. This site requires boat access and is situated approximately 39 kilometres from the shore. Depths range from 12 to 44 metres, with an average depth of 25 metres. Due to the challenging navigation caused by granite outcrops and submerged islets, boat charters are recommended. Water temperatures remain cool, ranging between 17C and 20C throughout the year, necessitating a wetsuit of at least 5mm. The site is suited for intermediate divers, while snorkelling opportunities are limited.

Bring a wetsuit of at least 5mm as the water stays cold year-round, even on warm days. Book through one of the local boat charter operators who run guided tours, as navigating the archipelago independently without local knowledge is genuinely tricky.
Access is via boat charter from Esperance. Woody Island is the only island generally open to the public, serviced by the Woody Island Eco Tour which takes about 45 minutes. Most islands in the archipelago are otherwise off-limits as part of the nature reserve.
