The Museum of Underwater Art at John Brewer Reef combines contemporary sculpture with living coral in an experience unlike any other dive site in Australia. Installed between 4 and 18 metres, the large-scale installations provide structure for marine life while creating an otherworldly landscape. You'll find the artworks colonised by coral and surrounded by schools of parrotfish and barracuda. Visibility ranges from 10 to 25 metres, making the sculptures easy to spot and photograph. The mild current suits newer divers perfectly, and the sandy patches between coral formations provide comfortable spots to adjust your buoyancy. Sea turtles often glide past the installations, while wobbegong sharks rest beneath ledges. White-tipped reef sharks patrol the drop-off, and if you're lucky during winter months, you might hear humpback whales singing in the distance. All visits require a boat charter, with most departing from Townsville or Magnetic Island. Guides accompany every dive, explaining both the artwork and the marine environment. Between May and October, conditions are typically at their best.

Visibility regularly reaches 10 to 30 metres, which lets you read the topography well and plan your route through the site. Currents are generally mild, though conditions can strengthen, so keep an eye on your position, particularly near the wall and in deeper water. The reef supports a range of local species typical of the Great Barrier Reef system. Boat access only, with no permanent facilities on-site, so come prepared. Most months dive well here, with July and August the notable exceptions.

Kelso Reef is a coral reef site off Queensland that works well for beginners, with calm conditions and no current to manage. The reef runs from very shallow water down to around 30 metres, so you can explore comfortably at whatever depth suits your confidence level. Visibility is generous, ranging from 10 to 30 metres in clear conditions, which makes it easy to keep track of your surroundings and take in the reef species around you. Access is by boat only. One thing to watch: the coral here is sharp, so be mindful of your buoyancy and avoid touching or resting on the reef.

Chicken Reef combines a wall and reef structure in one accessible dive, though the depth range of 15 to 50 metres means beginners should stay on the shallower sections of the reef rather than following the wall down. Hard and soft corals cover the structure, and the fish life is genuinely varied: turtles, trevally, barracuda, Maori wrasse, and giant grouper are all regular sights.
