Depth ranges span from shallow reef structures accessible to beginners through to deep technical walls suited only to advanced divers. The wider species list also includes Burbot, Freshwater Shrimp and Trout, though these are expected-range species rather than confirmed sightings. The fauna is entirely freshwater, which makes Lake Baikal distinctive compared to most dive destinations.
Lake Baikal caters to a broad range of skill levels. Sites such as Listvyanka, Back River Reef and Baranchiki are rated beginner-friendly with straightforward shore entries and manageable depths. Intermediate divers will find wall and canyon sites like Srednya pad and Sennaya pad rewarding, while Sobolev Foreland is reserved for advanced divers given its deep vertical drop-off and strong currents.
Listvyanka holds the majority of sites and offers the widest variety of topography, including walls, canyons, a wreck and artificial reefs, with options for all skill levels. Olkhon Island has fewer sites and its main dive, Olkhon North, suits intermediate divers looking for a reef-like structure in a shallower depth range. Boat access is needed for several Listvyanka sites, while shore entry is the norm at Olkhon.
