Spirits Bay is a remote, exposed reef site located at the northern tip of Northland, New Zealand. This shore-entry location is suited for advanced divers due to strong currents, surge, and potential rip currents. The topography features rocky ledges, particularly near the Kapowairua stream mouth, which offer the most suitable conditions for snorkelling during calm weather. Water temperatures range from 16C to 21C throughout the year. Divers should be aware of hazards including entanglement, surf, and sharp reef structures. The habitat supports a variety of temperate marine life, including reef fish and invertebrates typical of the region.
