Brown to olive base colouration covered in bold white or pale patches gives this octopus a strongly blotched, high-contrast pattern that mimics algae-encrusted rock or rubble. The arms are notably slender and carry prominent papillae (small skin spikes), which are the key feature to look for when the animal is extended and moving. It is a relatively small octopus; the arms tend to look long in proportion to the compact mantle. When threatened it can flatten and darken dramatically, and it is known to walk across exposed substrate on two arms while holding the others overhead to mimic drifting algae.
