Rattlesnake Island is a rocky formation in Elephant Butte Lake that functions as a peninsula during periods of low water. The site features submerged ledges along its eastern side, located approximately 50 metres from the shore. Snorkellers should be aware of the thermocline, as deeper water remains noticeably colder due to thermal stratification and inflow from cooler tributaries. The site is suitable for intermediate snorkellers, with access available from both the shore and by boat. Hazards include boat traffic, entanglement risks, and areas of low visibility. Facilities at the location include parking, toilets, and boat charter services.

The Butte is a freshwater dive site defined by its volcanic core, which features steep submerged walls and large volcanic boulders. Divers can explore depths ranging from 9 to 48 metres. Access to this site is by boat only. Conditions at the site vary, with water temperatures fluctuating from 2°C in winter to 29°C during the summer months. Divers should be aware of potential hazards including boat traffic, cold water, and low visibility. The site is suitable for intermediate divers, and the area is also rated for snorkelling.

The Dam Site is a freshwater location featuring submerged man-made structures and rocky embankments near the historic 1916 dam. Divers and snorkellers can explore these artificial reef features at depths ranging from 3 to 12 metres, with an average depth of 6 metres. Conditions include mild currents and visibility between 5 and 15 metres. Water temperatures are cold, typically between 11 and 13 degrees Celsius, requiring appropriate thermal protection. The site is accessible by both shore and boat, and facilities include parking, toilets, showers, a dive shop, and boat charters. Due to the cold water, potential for entanglement, and variable visibility, this site is best suited for intermediate divers.

Rock Canyon Cove is a freshwater site featuring rocky outcrops. This northern cove offers a quieter environment with minimal boat traffic, making it suitable for beginners. Divers and snorkellers can access the water from the shore or by boat. Typical dives last approximately 45 minutes. Facilities available at the site include parking, toilets, showers, changing rooms, a rinse station, air fills, equipment rental, a dive shop, boat charters, guided tours, and a cafe. First aid is also provided on-site. Be aware that low visibility due to silt is a potential hazard at this location.
