Lake Ilopango is a volcanic caldera lake lying close to San Salvador, and it is an altitude diving environment that requires attention to dive planning. The lake features walls, drop-offs, and artificial reef structures, with depths reaching well beyond recreational limits at the deepest points. A pronounced thermocline sits between roughly twelve and fifteen metres, below which conditions and visibility can differ markedly from the surface layer. Visibility at deeper sites such as Ilopango itself is low, typically between one and six metres, while shallower sites like Isla de los Patos can offer considerably clearer water. Sites span beginner through to advanced level, and all are reached by boat or from shore.

Water temperature sits in the upper twenties to thirty degrees Celsius throughout the year, so exposure protection is a comfort choice rather than a necessity. The dry season from November to April is preferred for visibility, especially at deeper sites where surface run-off during the rainy season can reduce clarity above the thermocline.
