Lake Atitlán is a high-altitude freshwater lake set inside a volcanic crater in the Guatemalan Highlands. Diving here demands altitude procedures because the reduced surface pressure affects decompression calculations compared with sea-level diving. The sites in our database range from shallow reef and wall structures to an artificial reef, all accessed by boat. Geothermal vents at Agua Caliente and Hot Spring create thermoclines and shimmering mixing zones where warm and cold water meet. Visibility is variable across all sites and can shift unpredictably, particularly where vents are active. Freshwater species recorded here include catfish and livebearers.
