Look for a long, slightly flattened, torpedo-shaped fish in grey, brown or near-black, usually stuck flat against the body of something much bigger. The giveaway is the flattened, ridged sucker disc on top of the head, which replaces a normal dorsal fin and does the actual attaching. Detached ones swim in the open with an odd, undulating motion and a noticeably flat-topped head profile that separates them from any similarly shaped free-swimming fish.
