Deepwater butterflyfish spotted in KwaZulu-Natal and Musandam, year-round in warm 22-28C water. Here's where to find one.
A small, deep-bodied butterflyfish around 10 cm, pale grey to silvery-white with a dark diagonal bar running through the eye and a scatter of fine dark chevron markings toward the tail. Fins carry a soft yellow wash, most noticeable on the dorsal and anal fins. Unlike the shallow reef butterflyfish most divers know, this one is usually spotted well down a wall or slope rather than cruising open coral flats.
Divers typically find this one alone or in a loose pair, working slowly over deep reef slopes and rocky walls rather than schooling in the open. It picks at the substrate for small invertebrates and tends to stay close to structure, ducking into crevices if approached too fast. Given its depth range starting around 40 metres, most sightings come from technical or deep recreational dives rather than casual reef swims.
Its depth range (40 to 200 metres) sits well below where most butterflyfish live, making it one of the deeper-dwelling members of the family and a real target for divers running deep profiles on Indian Ocean walls.

Most reliably logged along KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, with strong numbers also around Ponta do Ouro and the Quirimbas Archipelago in Mozambique. Further north and east it turns up on deep reef sites in Musandam (Oman), the Arabian Gulf off the UAE, and around the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, Mombasa in Kenya, and Nosy Be in Madagascar.
