Boesmansgat is a freshwater sinkhole in the Northern Cape, formed by the dissolution of dolomite rock and sitting at high altitude on a private farm. The cave system begins at around ten metres and descends vertically to nearly two hundred and eighty-four metres, making it one of the world's deepest submerged freshwater caves. Water temperatures are stable between nineteen and twenty-two degrees Celsius, and visibility can reach sixty metres in good conditions, though it may drop considerably. This is a stark, technical environment with no marine life to speak of; divers come here for the architecture of the cave and the challenge of extreme depth.
