The Wedgetail Triggerfish, also known as the Rectangular Triggerfish or Picasso Triggerfish, is a vibrant and charismatic reef resident sure to catch your eye! Averaging around 21cm but occasionally reaching 30cm, these fish are commonly encountered by divers and snorkellers exploring shallow reef environments, typically between the surface and 20 meters. What makes them special is their striking geometric patterns and bold personality. While not always guaranteed, spotting one of these beauties is a highlight for many divers in tropical waters. Keep an eye out for them while cruising along the reef edge or investigating coral bommies. They're especially prevalent in Hawaii, Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, and even as far north as Japan and Korea.
The Wedgetail Triggerfish is easily recognizable by its distinctive wedge-shaped body and bold color pattern. Look for a black mask across the eyes, a bright yellow throat, and a dark band running from the top of the head down to the pectoral fin. A white or light blue rectangular patch on its side is another key identifier. Their swimming style is also characteristic, often using their dorsal and anal fins for propulsion, giving them a slightly jerky movement.
