The Flagtail Triggerfish (Sufflamen chrysopterum) is a vibrant and relatively small triggerfish that adds a splash of color to reefs across the Indo-Pacific region. Divers and snorkelers often spot them cruising along coral formations, searching for a tasty snack. While not as bold as some of its larger triggerfish cousins, the Flagtail's distinctive appearance makes it a memorable encounter. Keep an eye out for them in areas with rich coral growth and plenty of hiding places, as they tend to be more common in these environments. Their relatively small size compared to other triggerfish also makes them less intimidating and more approachable for underwater photographers.
The Flagtail Triggerfish is easily recognizable by its overall tan to yellowish-brown body. Its most striking feature is, of course, the bright yellow or orange caudal fin (tail fin), which gives it its name. A thin, dark line runs along the base of the dorsal and anal fins. They have a characteristic diamond-shaped body typical of triggerfish, and a relatively small mouth compared to other members of its family. Juveniles may exhibit slightly different coloration, but the yellow tail is a consistent identifier.
