The Pinktail Triggerfish (Melichthys vidua) is a captivating sight for divers and snorkellers exploring tropical reefs. This striking fish is a member of the triggerfish family, known for their unique body shape and often bold personalities. While not as frequently encountered as some other reef inhabitants, spotting a Pinktail Triggerfish is always a treat. They are typically found cruising along reef faces, often in search of food. Their vibrant colours and distinctive tail make them a memorable addition to any underwater encounter. Keep an eye out for them in crevices and around coral formations, as these are their preferred hunting grounds.
The Pinktail Triggerfish is easily identified by its overall dark grey to black body and, most notably, its bright pink to red caudal fin (tail). The dorsal and anal fins also have a subtle pinkish hue. It has a classic triggerfish shape: an oval body, small mouth with strong teeth, and a prominent dorsal spine that can be locked into place for protection. Juvenile Pinktail Triggerfish can have a slightly different colouration, sometimes appearing more brownish or with a less intensely coloured tail, but the pink tail is almost always present as they mature.
