The Grey Triggerfish is characterized by its oval, laterally compressed body and its overall grey coloration, which can vary in intensity. A key feature is its prominent dorsal spine, which it can lock into an upright position for defense. Look for its small, beady eyes set high on its head and its relatively small mouth with strong jaws. Its jerky swimming style and tendency to hover also help distinguish it from other reef fish.
Balistidae
The Grey Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) is a common sight for divers and snorkelers exploring reefs across the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean. These intriguing fish, typically around 46cm but growing up to 66cm, are easily recognizable with their distinctive body shape and colouration. While not the most vibrantly coloured fish on the reef, their subtle grey hue and intriguing behavior make them a worthwhile encounter. They're often seen cruising along the reef face, sometimes in pairs or small groups, using their powerful jaws to forage for invertebrates. Keep an eye out for them near rocky outcrops and seagrass beds, generally in depths from the surface down to 100m.
