The Bluespotted Fantail Ray is easily identified by its oval-shaped body and vibrant blue spots scattered across its back. Look for the distinctive blue spots contrasting against a yellowish-brown or olive-green background. The tail is relatively short and features two blue stripes running along its length. When at rest, it often has a slightly raised front edge, creating a subtle 'fantail' appearance.

The Bluespotted Fantail Ray (Taeniura lymma) is a dazzling gem of shallow tropical reefs, a common sight that never fails to excite divers and snorkelers. Reaching up to 35cm in diameter but typically around 24cm, these rays are relatively small, making them easier to spot amongst the coral. These rays are masters of camouflage, often partially buried in the sand or tucked under ledges during the day. Keep an eye out around coral bommies and sandy patches – you're most likely to encounter them while slowly cruising the reef, especially in the Great Barrier Reef, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean, and the Red Sea. With a diver appeal score of 5/5, this stunning species is a must-see for any underwater explorer, but remember to observe from a respectful distance as they do possess a venomous tail spine for defense.
