Look for a large, heart-shaped carapace (shell) that's typically a mottled brown or olive colour. Their plastron (belly) is usually a pale yellow. Green Sea Turtles have a relatively smooth shell compared to other sea turtles, and their heads are small and blunt. They also possess paddle-like flippers perfectly adapted for swimming, and you'll often see them using their front flippers to 'fly' through the water.
Cheloniidae
The Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) is a true icon of tropical and subtropical waters, and a highly sought-after sighting for any diver or snorkeller. Reaching up to a metre in length, these gentle giants are a common sight in popular diving hotspots like the Great Barrier Reef, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia. Encounters often involve observing them gracefully grazing on seagrass beds in shallower, sunlit areas. Their calm demeanor and tolerance of human presence make for unforgettable underwater experiences. Seeing a Green Sea Turtle glide effortlessly through the water is a privilege, a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our oceans.
