Orectolobus spp.

1.2m
1-40m
Look for a flattened body shape, resembling a carpet more than a typical shark. Their colouration is mottled brown, beige, and grey, providing excellent camouflage against the reef. A key feature is the presence of dermal lobes, or 'tassels', around the mouth, giving them a bearded appearance. Wobbegongs are typically around 120cm long, and you'll usually find them lying still on the seabed or tucked under ledges.

Orectolobidae
Wobbegongs, those fascinating tasseled sharks, are a favourite sighting for many divers and snorkellers! These masters of camouflage blend seamlessly into the reef, resembling a living carpet more than a shark. Their flattened bodies and intricate patterns make them a delight to spot, typically resting motionless on the seabed, waiting to ambush unsuspecting prey. Encounters usually occur in shallow waters, from just a few meters to around 40m, often tucked under ledges or within crevices. Keep an eye out for their distinctive 'beard' of dermal lobes around their mouths – these help break up their outline and attract small fish. While generally docile, remember these are still sharks, so admire from a respectful distance!
