The Blue Tang is unmistakable thanks to its brilliant blue body, a black 'palette' marking stretching from its eye along its back to its tail, and a bright yellow tail. Its oval, laterally compressed body shape further distinguishes it. Juveniles can be a vibrant yellow before transitioning to their adult blue coloration. Look for them darting in and out of coral, often in small groups.
Acanthuridae
The Blue Tang, also known as the Palette Tang, Hippo Tang, or Dory (thanks, Pixar!), is a vibrant splash of electric blue that instantly catches the eye on any reef. These reef-associated beauties typically reach around 21cm, but can grow larger. You'll find them flitting around coral formations from shallow waters down to about 40m, making them accessible to both snorkellers and scuba divers. Keep an eye out for them in the Indian Ocean, the Great Barrier Reef, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific. Their striking colour and active nature make them a favourite subject for underwater photographers and a delight to observe. While generally peaceful, be mindful of their venomous spines; admiring from a distance is always best.
