Octopodidae
The octopus, a master of disguise and underwater acrobat, is a highlight for any dive or snorkel trip. These cephalopods, typically around 50cm in size, are found in a variety of habitats from shallow reefs to deeper waters down to 50m. Encounters are often fleeting, as they are masters of camouflage, blending seamlessly with their surroundings. Spotting one is a reward in itself! Octopuses are intelligent creatures, capable of problem-solving and complex behaviors, making each encounter unique and fascinating. Keep a respectful distance, as some species, like the blue-ringed octopus, are highly venomous. Never touch an octopus, admire them from afar.
Look for a soft, rounded body with eight arms covered in suckers. Their skin texture can change rapidly to match their surroundings, displaying a wide range of colors and patterns. They often move with a graceful, flowing motion, either crawling along the seabed or jetting through the water. Their large, expressive eyes are also a key identifier, often showing curiosity and intelligence.
Safety Warning
Blue-ringed octopus is highly venomous and potentially lethal. Never touch any octopus.
