The Varicose Wart Slug (Phyllidia varicosa) is a striking nudibranch that adds a splash of unusual beauty to the reef. Averaging around 4cm but occasionally reaching 7cm, these slugs are a treat to spot in the 10-20m depth range. Though they aren't frequently seen, divers in the Great Barrier Reef, Japan & Korea, and the South Pacific have the best chance of encountering them. These bottom-dwelling (benthic) creatures favor neritic zones, adding a touch of the unexpected to your dive. What makes the Varicose Wart Slug so special? It's all in the warts! These slugs are covered in distinctive, raised tubercles that give them a unique, almost alien appearance. Keep your eyes peeled as you explore the reef floor; while not actively seeking divers, a lucky encounter with this vibrant nudibranch will undoubtedly be a highlight of your dive.
The Varicose Wart Slug is easily recognized by its elongated body covered in prominent, pinkish-purple warts or tubercles. The base color of the body is typically a creamy white or light grey. A distinct black line often runs along the dorsal ridge, further enhancing its unique appearance. Unlike many other nudibranchs, it lacks prominent gills or rhinophores, adding to its somewhat 'warty' profile.
