The Bonnethead is easily recognized by its unique, shovel-shaped head, much more rounded than other hammerheads. They are typically a greyish-brown colour with a lighter underside. Their small size, usually around 105cm but up to 150cm, also helps distinguish them. Look for their active swimming style, as they are constantly on the move searching for food.
Sphyrnidae
Imagine encountering a hammerhead, but… cuter! That's the Bonnethead shark, the smallest member of the hammerhead family. These fascinating creatures are reef-associated sharks found in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean, often cruising in depths of 10-80m. While not frequently observed at specific dive sites, scoring a 5/5 for diver appeal hints at the thrill of a potential encounter. Keep an eye out for these shy sharks when diving reefs, as a glimpse of a Bonnethead is a special treat for any underwater enthusiast.
