Bluestriped Grunts are easily identified by their bright yellow body crisscrossed with horizontal, electric-blue stripes. Their lips are thick and fleshy, and they possess a slightly elongated snout. The fins are generally yellow, and they often congregate in large schools, especially during the day near coral formations. Listen carefully underwater, as they produce a 'grunting' sound by rubbing their pharyngeal teeth together, hence the name!
Haemulidae
The Bluestriped Grunt, a vibrant member of the Haemulidae family, is a common and captivating sight for divers and snorkellers exploring the warm waters of the Caribbean, Eastern Pacific, and North Atlantic. Reaching a typical size of 32cm (but occasionally growing up to 46cm!), these reef-associated fish add a splash of colour to coral gardens and rocky outcroppings, typically between the surface and 30 meters. Their striking appearance and social behaviour make them a favourite among underwater enthusiasts. Imagine drifting along a reef, and suddenly encountering a school of these shimmering beauties – a truly unforgettable experience!
