The Garibaldi, California's state marine fish, is a vibrant splash of orange that instantly brightens any dive or snorkel in the Eastern Pacific! These dazzling damselfish are a common sight in kelp forests and rocky reefs, often seen patrolling their territories with a confident air. Reaching up to 30cm, their bright orange bodies make them unmistakable, a true spectacle to behold underwater. Keep an eye out for juveniles, which are equally striking with brilliant blue spots that fade as they mature. Divers and snorkellers frequently encounter them while exploring reefs, especially in shallower waters where sunlight enhances their fiery colour.
The Garibaldi is easily identified by its brilliant orange body, a colour unmatched by most other fish in its habitat. Its robust, oval shape and moderately sized fins contribute to its distinctive appearance. Juveniles have bright blue spots that gradually disappear as they mature into adults. Look for their territorial displays, often involving rapid darting and fin-flaring, which can further aid in identifying them.
